Independents' day, 2008
Independents' Day is the day on which
we celebrate the achievements of independent archaeologists,
by visiting one of the leading archaeological societies
and see how they contribute to the success of independent
(non-government) archaeology.
This year we visit Monmouth
on the 30th August 2008, to celebrate the work of the
Monmouth Archaeological Society and its leader Steve
Clarke.

Join us if you wish to know:
* How to explore your local
area — Steve Clarke and the neighbouring
societies will be revealing some of their recent work.
* Learn the latest tips
and tricks of using a resistivity meter.
Many societies have bought the TR/CIA resistivity meter,
and Bob Randall, who designed and manufactured the machines
will demonstrate his latest techniques for producing
vertical sections.
* How to buy your own Medieval
town. Stuart Wilson did just this, when
he bought the deserted Medieval town of Trellech –
once one of the largest medieval town in Wales. In the
afternoon, we visit the site of Trellech, and Stuart
Wilson will reveal how he plans to spend the next 300
years digging the town.
The meeting, which begins at 10.30,
will be at the Monmouth
Leisure Centre and will be combined with the AGM
of the Council for Independent Archaeology. The cost
for the day is only £15 which includes which includes
a light lunch.

Congress of Independent Archaeologists, 2009
The next full weekend Congress will be on the
29th - 30th August 2009 in The Dome, Buxton, Derbyshire.
The Congress will be held in conjunction with the Derbyshire
Archaeological Society and will concentrate on Industrial
archaeology and the role of the amateur archaeologist.
The Dome is one of the grandest conference locations
anywhere in Britain. Once a magnificent 18th Century
stable block built to house the 5th Duke of Devonshire’s
horses and servants. It was the hospital for a number
of years and is now part of the University of Derby
in Buxton. Web link http://www.thedomeevents.co.uk/

Conference and meetings
We
hold conferences
and meetings to bring independent archaeologists
together. This is the only national opportunity for
local societies to come together to learn about the
problems and achievements of other societies. We hope
to see you at one of them - ideas for new topics for
discussion always welcome!

Chairman of the East Riding Archaeological Society,
who hosted the 2007
Congress, here displays some of the prehistoric
types of wheat that she has been growing.

Resistivity Meter
We help local independent archaeologists
to do archaeology notably by the production of our low-cost
Resistivity Meter.
Production has now ceased, but click here to be put
on the waiting list

We work for better
collaboration between amateurs and professionals

The Valletta Convention
The Valletta Convention of the Council of Europe appears
to aim to outlaw independent archaeology. Read
