The Museum of Early Medieval Northumbria focuses on the life and times of the Venerable Bede. There is also a 15 acre 'Anglo-Saxon' farm on which elements of secular life in Bede's time are being recreated, including cultivation of ancient cereals, rare breeds of animals and reconstruction of timber buildings. The museum received a £3m lottery award and will begin to build the final phase of the project in 1999.
