Discussion GroupsOne of the best ways of finding out information in archaeology is by joining a discussion group, and asking a question.
Most of these are now based on email: all you have to do is to send your name to the server with a request to subscribe. It is normally essential to leave out all other information, e.g. automatic signatures to your messages.
The most useful discussion group in British Archaeology is Britarch, immaculately run by Mike Heyworth for the Council of British Archaeology.
To join, send the following email message to
mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk The American equivalent is ARCH-L, which often has useful general discussions.
To join, email to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.TAMU.EDU
For those with an interest in megaliths and sacred monuments, a popular list is Chris Tweed's 'The Stones Mailing List ' , which is often used as a convenient method of communication between members of ASLaN - The Ancient Sacred Landscape Network.
Those interested in re-enactment might like to try 'Histrenact': One should also note USENET, once the central forum for discussion on the web, but now in decline. The two most popular groups, alt.archaeology and sci.archaeology are both unfortunately haunted by the lunatic fringe. The best one is sci.archaeology.moderated, which after a slow start is now producing lively discussions. Return to the Current Archaeology Welcome page |
