The Think Tank

A collection of web pages in which the editor explores various aspects of archaeology and archaeological philosophy.

  • Who Owns the Past?
There is a tendency to say that 'The People' own the past, the government represents the people; the bureaucrats represent the government, so the Bureaucrats 'own' the past: so everyone else, keep out!
This is a special version of a report originally published in full by the Adam Smith Institute which argues that the position is rather more complex: it is those who care for the past, and who study it - and those who love it - the amateurs - who should be considered to 'own' the past.
  • Looting, or, Liberty and Archaeology
These pages, originally written for a meeting in Bournemouth of the European Association of Archaeologists look at the problem of the looting of archaeological sites, and put forward a libertarian approach.
  • Londinium . What was Roman London? How far was it a 'normal' Roman town? Here we analyse the different types of Roman town, and suggest that London may have been an imperial foundation.
