The Londinium ProjectWhat was Roman London?Roman London, or Londinium to call it by its Roman name, is something of a mystery. It was the largest town in Roman Britain by far - at least to judge by the area within the Roman walls. It had the largest and grandest buildings in Roman Britain - the great basilica, at the end of the forum, is even said to be the largest Roman Building north of the Alps. Yet its status is obscure. It was no doubt the 'capital' of Roman Britain. Yet it was not a colonia, or chartered town. It was not even a county town, one of the so-called civitas capitals. So what was it? In these pages we will explore the mystery of Roman London. We will look at the people who lived there, the great buildings, its history, its foundation, and at the land around London. This project is still only at its very beginning - we hope it will grow gradually; indeed, if you would like to help us add some further pages to the story, please email us now. At present all we have to offer is the text of an article published in the magazine The London Archaeologist which sets out the problems, and offers a bold and unusual solution. We hope to have some more pages - and some more pictures soon. Click here for The London Archaeologist article.
