From 1 st September 2008, part-time teachers’ pay will be calculated as a percentage of the appropriate full-time equivalent salary. The same percentage must also be applied to any allowances awarded to a part-time teacher. The main change is that the school’s ‘timetabled teaching week’ for a full-time classroom teacher at the school is to be used as the basis for calculating the pro-rata percentage for the part-time teacher.

The timetabled teaching week is the hours that are timetabled for teaching, including PPA time and other non-contact time but excluding break times, registration and assemblies.

PART TIME TEACHERS' PAY

In this example ,

If all days are the same the timetabled teaching week is 5 x 5hrs = 25hrs per week

1) A part-time teacher teaching only mornings does 5 x 3hrs = 15 hrs per week

Their percentage of the timetabled teaching week is 15/25 x 100 = 60 %

2) A part-time teacher teaching only afternoons does 5 x 2hrs = 10 hrs per week

Their percentage of the timetabled teaching week is 10/25 x 100 = 40 %

3) A jobsharer working 2 full days + a morning does 5 + 5 + 3 = 13hrs per week

Their percentage of the timetabled teaching week is 13/25 x 100 = 52 %

Part-time teachers’ Working Time

With effect from 1 st September 2008 part-time teachers should be provided with a written, agreed statement which sets out the expectations, of the school and the part-time teacher, regarding the deployment of working time. This should include all directed time commitments. It may take a few weeks for this to come into effect but that duty has been placed on governors.

Clearly if the statement is to be agreed there will have to be some discussion between part-timers and management. Please read the rest of this article and if you need further advice before a meeting ring or email a Bradford NUT officer on 01274 414 664 or contact@bradfordnut.org

A full time teacher can be directed to carry out reasonable duties by their head teacher to a limit of 1265 hrs per year. For a part time teacher this is reduced pro rata using the percentage of the timetabled teaching week they work (see above).

Registration, assemblies and breaks, which are not counted in the timetabled teaching week, are counted in the directed time calculation.

Note also that:

‘Part-time teachers cannot be required to work or attend non-pupil days, or parts of days, on days they do not normally work. It should, however, be open to the teacher to attend non-pupil days or work on other days by mutual agreement with the head teacher (and then paid for the resultant additional hours worked) They may, however … be required to undertake work that is within their allocation of directed time beyond that specified in the school’s timetabled teaching week, allocated reasonably on any day or part of any day on which they are required to work..’

This is a quote from the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document 2008 (page 191 paragraph 161) which governs our pay by statute. It protects part-time teachers from being directed to work on days or part days (morning or afternoon) that they do not normally work.

SAFEGUARDING

Where the new salary is less than the original salary the teacher may be paid a safeguarded sum, equivalent to the difference between the two, in addition to the new salary for a period up to three years. This can be a complicated calculation and can be affected if the teacher receives an additional point on the pay scale this September. Please contact the office if you want us to check that you are eligible for safeguarding and whether you are being paid the correct amount of safeguarding.
