Cracking Up

The worsening state of rural roads has been a regular source of complaint to local Councillors. Now it is the state of road repairs themselves that has become the main source of complaint! Last year road surfacing between Upton and Southwell and on several residential roads in Southwell had no sooner been completed than the surface started to break up again.

The local Highways Office has agreed that the resurfacing was unsatisfactory due to a "materials failure". Reworking has been undertaken on the A612 near Upton but other roads including Allenby Road will not be resurfaced until summer at the earliest. Meanwhile, local Lib Dem councillors have asked the County Council to confirm that the additional cost of reworking will not be at Council Tax payers' expense.

NB Following ten years of cuts in Road Maintenance expenditure, the total budget for patching and repairs to roads in the entire Newark district is only £220,000
