Focus April 1999
"The Liberal Democrats exist to build
and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which
we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty,
equality and community, and in which no-one shall be
enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity."
(Preamble to the Party Constitution).
Crumbling
Answers to Crumbling Roads
In an open letter to local
residents the Labour leader of Notts. County
Council has justified the large Council Tax hike
because they intend "protecting spending on
repairing the roads" Yet every year since
1991 the Labour Council, against strong Liberal
Democrat clearly costed opposition, has cut the
annual Road repairs budget from expenditure of
just under £10 million in 1991 to less than £2
million last. Not surprisingly the repairs needed
have risen from £13 million to £35 million. So
what "protection" is the County Council
now offering? Answer: and extra £30,000 to spend
over last year's budget! Still leaving a 94%
shortfall in term's of the total maintenance
needs.
