With his team of four optometrists, two dispensing opticians, one optical assistant and nine administrative staff, Mr Roger Spooner runs his independent chain of practices in the Bristol area. He opened his first practice 27 years ago, in Redfield. When this business grew and grew, he opened a second branch in nearby Hanham and then a third followed in Keynsham in 1985, which is now sole premises, enabling Roger Spooner to consolidate all their expertise in one, easily accessible location.

Roger graduated  from Cardiff University in 1968 and has practised in south west England ever since. When he first set up in business, he realised the need for domiciliary appointments (home visits) in the area. This service is now more popular than ever, with the ever-increasing elderly population. There are also those patients with disabilities who would find it impossible to visit any of the practices in person. Roger does regular domiciliary examinations.

Over the last eight years, Roger Spooner has specialised in eye and vision problems that occur in those with various health problems and learning difficulties. He is a specialist in examining possible and diagnosed dyslexics, aswell as those with less severe problems that affect their learning capabilities. He can now assess patients who have suffered head injuries, or can complete work disability assessments. Roger can also advise on causes of and steps to take to avoid migraine. He is also expert in the vision problems associated with epilepsia and multiple sclerosis. He receives referrals from all over the south west of England, from institutions such as the Dyslexic Institute, schools, work disability centres, doctors and solicitors.

For the past six years,  Roger Spooner has been the only centre in the south west to supply Chromagen lenses to aid colour defective patients. This recent development has been really successful in remedying colour blindness in people of all ages, with either glasses or contact lenses. These Chromagen lenses are now being used to aid dyslexic patients with reading difficulties, a practice that has been phenomenally successful. Roger Spooner is one of the very few opticians in the country who has backed these developments since the outset. He says "I regularly receive letters and cards from my Chromagen patients and one gentleman writes to me every month to describe the new things that he has seen. The system brings a pleasure in my work that I just don't get from regular practice."

Of course, Roger also takes care to properly carry out all normal examinations, and he is also very interested in glaucoma patients and cases of diabetic screening. Email him at roger@rogerspooner.co.uk.
