Links and Downloads.

The web pages on the ALDES site have been deliberately kept simple, so that they are usable with most browsers, old and new.
However, there may be problems on individual setups.
If you are having difficulty, please try out the suggestions below.
If they do not work, please tell Ian Sanderson, quoting your operating system ( for instance,Windows XP; Mandrake Linux) and Browser (for instance, Internet Explorer 6.0; Netscape 7.0).

Links in general.

Most links in this site will cause the new page to replace the current one in the browser window. However, in some cases, the page is written so that the new page opens its own browser window; this means that you can keep both pages open and easily switch between them. An example of this is the link to the main Liberal Democrats site at the top of each page.
You can do this for yourself for any new page by right-clicking on the link and choosing the correct item for the menu that appears (usually "Open Link in New Window" ). Some papers on this site are written in HTML, which means that they will display quickly as a new page when you click on their link. Other papers are written in the Adobe Acrobat format; see "Files in Adobe Acrobat formats" below.

Links to other sites.

Our pages have links to the web sites of some of our speakers, or of their employers, and of parliamentary members. We don't control these sites; they may change and some of them use more complex coding than the ALDES site. If you have difficulty, opening the new link a New Window (see above) may help. Trying again at a later time may also resolve difficulty. If one of these external links repeatedly doesn't work for you, please let Ian Sanderson know.

mailto: links.

The names of some of the ALDES committee have links intended to open your email program with the To: address already filled in. However, whether this actually works depends on the setup of your own computer. If you need to email ALDES and this doesn't work for you, you can copy and paste the address from the web page.

Links to Files in Adobe Acrobat format (pdf )

Documents in most formats, including html and Word .doc, change their appearance depending on the setup of your computer. To avoid this problem, most documents you can view on this site, are in Adobe Acrobat format. To read or print these, you need to have Adobe Reader, which is freeware, installed on your computer. If you haven't got it already, you can get a version which suits your computer from the Adobe Web site: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html.
If you have Adobe Reader installed as a "plug-in" to your web browser, clicking on the link to a pdf document will cause Adobe Reader to start up and the document to be displayed. This may take a little time.
If you haven't got Adobe Reader as a "plug-in", or the process takes too long, you can download and store the pdf file on your computer by right-clicking on the link and selecting from the menu ( "Save Target As" or "Save Link As "). You can then read and print the pdf file off line.
