Greenland 2000

The trip to Greenland was successful. We made to first every crossing from the Rigyns Berg area of Greenland to Gunnsbjerg Fjeld in 13 days and finished by making the 33rd ascent of Gunnsbjerg Fjeld, 2 days before we were picked by the Twin Otter.

In all, we had only a couple of bad weather days and averaged about 16km a day. We experienced temperatures down to -30 degs C that cause real problems for us lighting the stoves. Even then the temperature only rose to -17 degs C in the tent!

The images will eventually link on to other pages and you will then be to see more images of the day!

Day 1: 30/31 May 2000

At Constable Pynt loading the Twin Otter, flew into Rigyns Berg and then departed towards Camp 1 on the Cooper Glacier.

Day 2: 31 May/1 June 2000

Sledge pulling along the Cooper Glacier and made camp 2 early in the morning in light snow.

Day 3: 1/2 June 2000

Moving up on to the Icecap, -25 degs C with a 30kt wind blowing but fantastic views along the Berry Glacier and down to the Cooper Glacier. This was a long and very tiring day with some 600m+ of ascent in it, up sastrugi affected slopes. Camp 3 was cold!

John had his clothes welded together by the ice formed from the sweat and he need assistance in getting out of them. The MSR stove washer was also very stiff and we had a few squirts of fuel whilst pumping - just to add interest to the cooking!

Day 4: 2/3 June 2000

The icecap appeared to be flat but the undulation were very significant, taking several hours to get up them. We did 14km during the evening and pitched camp at 2am in the morning.

Day 5 3/4 June 2000

We made progress to the southwest on the flank of the icecap. In the distance we had views of peaks that were unclimbed. Camp 5 was at 2800m with wonderful views towards the Watkins mountains.

Day 6 4/5 June 2000

A cold and grey start that saw us cover 20km to reach the descent off the Icecap with stunning views. Gunnsbjerg Fjeld is only 90km away as the crow flies according to the GPS
