A big welcome to all amateur archaeologists, archaeological societies, and all who contribute to the study of the past.

The Council for Independent Archaeology is the only society in British archaeology that aims to bring together ‘independent’ archaeologists – that is those who are independent of government funding: it includes loosely all ‘amateur’ archaeologists and those in local archaeological societies or ‘community’ archaeology.

Next meeting

The next one-day conference will be held at Monmouth on the 30th August 2008, and will celebrate the work of the Monmouth Archaeological society and its leader Steve Clarke.
For over 30 years now, the society has been active in Monmouth and its region and during the course of the day, Steve and his team will tell us about some of the campaigns the society has waged, and the digs they have carried out, and will then walk round Monmouth and show us some of the sites, and also the headquarters where the writing up in in progress.

For those who wish to stay the full weekend, it will be possible to see some of the major sites in the area on Sunday, including Tintern Abbey, Chepstow Castle and the Caerwent Roman town.

The full programme will be available shortly: to be put on the mailing list for information, please email Kevan Fadden, or Steve Clarke.
The next full weekend Congress will be in 2009, and is tentatively fixed for Derbyshire and the Peak district, concentrating on Industrial archaeology and the role of the amateur archaeologist.

Conference and meetings

We hold conferences and meetings to bring independent archaeologists together. This is the only national opportunity for local societies to come together to learn about the problems and achievements of other societies. We hope to see you at one of them - ideas for new topics for discussion always welcome!

We help

We help local independent archaeologists to do archaeology notably by the production of our low-cost Resistivity Meter. Production has now ceased, but click here to be put on the waiting list

We encourage

We work for better collaboration between amateurs and professionals - notably in our very successful 'Valletta' campaign.

The Valletta Convention

The Valletta Convention of the Council of Europe appears to aim to outlaw independent archaeology. Read here our analysis of this deeply flawed Convention.
