Agriculture and Archaeology: the New Relationship

The advent of 'set-aside' has revolutionized the relationship between farmers and archaeologists. But is this new relationship fully understood? Is it working as well as it could?

The 12th Congress of Independent Archaeologists was held at Bishop Burton Agricultural College, Beverley, East Yorkshire on the 1st - 2nd September 2007, hosted by the East Riding Archaeological Society

The theme was “Archaeology and Agriculture: The New Relationship” and included talks on :-

  • Agricultural 'set-aside' and archaeology
  • How to run your local archaeological society:
            tips and hints from the winners of the Pitt Rivers Awards, 2006

  • Geophysics and Archaeology: Recent results from the TR/CIA Resistivity Meter
  • Community Archaeology

On Friday evening a pre-Congress reception was held for those who live locally or who intend to stay that night This was a chance to meet up with old contacts, make new ones or even catch up on all the latest gossip. It was held in the Orangery set in the splendid gardens of the College. All are invited - you do not need to attend the Congress. (See booking form).

We will start on Saturday 1st. September at 10:00 a.m. with registration, followed by the AGM of the CIA.
The Congress talks will start at 11:00 a.m. and continue until 5:00 p.m.
The Congress dinner will be held in the evening with an after dinner speech. See Booking form.
On Sunday we will start at 9:30 a.m. and continue through till 1:00 p.m. leaving the afternoon free for delegates to see the unique sights in the locality or leave in good time for home.
Refreshments for delegates will be available throughout the Congress with lunch and dinner.

* The East Riding Archaeological Society is a very successful society of about 250 members. An earlier BAA winner it aims to promote interest in archaeology, both in the local area and further afield, through a programme of lectures, excursions, publications and fieldwork. www.ERAS.org.uk
