The12th Congress of Independent Archaeologists

Additional information about the conference venue

The 12th Congress of Independent Archaeologists will be held at Bishop Burton Agricultural College, Beverley, East Yorkshire on the 1st - 2nd September 2007, hosted by the East Riding Archaeological Society

Kate Dennett, the Secretary of the ERAS, emailed as follows:

“Rod and I went to Bishop Burton (Agricultural) College today to view the conference room and general facilities. We think it would be excellent – it’s a very attractive parkland campus on the edge of a small village just west of Beverley, with good modern conference hall and all usual facilities. Catering has a good reputation and is all in-house. They could do an evening event in the bar or even a wine reception in the Victorian conservatory/walled gardens! The accommodation is ''student village' style - ie small modern units which we weren't able to look inside, but the general standard of everything else would suggest it would be fine. Rooms are single - (80 with ensuite) but they have about five twin rooms I think. Reception etc is very well organised. We were certainly impressed and think it would have a better atmosphere (less institutional) than Hull University. I would suggest that you would need to book it ASAP for the weekend of Friday 31st August, even if we leave details until later. We usually get a good response to archaeology events in the region and might expect a good number of day visitors.

We like the idea of a theme linking farming and archaeology and have several ideas for a programme, but it would be good to meet you, together with ERAS chairman Paul Brayford, to talk about it sometime, once the main booking has been made. The College suggested that they might be able to help with suggestions for speakers on the topic”
