The 1999 Congress
Demystifying Field ArchaeologyThe 1999 Congress was held on 11th - 12th September 1999, on the title of 'Demystifying Field Archaeology '. One of the results of the professionalisation of archaeology in recent years is that volunteer archaeologists are less confident about tackling the full range of archaeological work. There is perhaps an understandable tendency among professionals to make a mystique out of their subject, to make out that it is more complicated and more mysterious than it really is, and the aim of the Congress was to Demystify Field Archaeology The theme of the Congress has been put forward by Neil Faulkner who addressed the 1997 Congress on the theme of Democratic Archaeology as exemplified in his Sedgeford project. One of the highlights of this congress was Peter Carnell's paper on Low Cost Geophysics in which he explained how to produce a resistivity meter from ordinary electronic components. This has produced widespread interest, and it is hoped to produce a manual on the subject and to make the design of a resistivity meter for sale. (This has now been achieved - October 2002) For Neil Faulkner's full proposals for this congress, click here.
