Botel, or Buittle, is a Motte and Bailey near Dalbeattie in the grounds of a 16th-century house. It was originally a royal castle of King John Baliol, and the motte is still owned by Baliol College, Oxford. Excavations take place throughout the summer. The project is non funded and staffed entirely by volunteers from April to September. Training £10 per week (minimum stay 2 weeks). Limited accommodation; camping. 5 open weekends (spring to Christmas and YAC day). ***
