Boat rescue

The Magor Pill Boat

In the Middle Ages, perhaps in the 13th century, a small boat was making its way to the tiny harbour of Magor Pill, near Newport, in South Wales. It was heavily laden with iron ore, and when a storm sprang up, it sank into the mud and was abandoned.

In August 1994, Derek Upton, who was walking the mud flats in search of ancient remains, spotted a plank from the boat, and the story of how the boat was excavated by the local Archaeological Trust makes an exciting story in the latest issue of Current Archaeology.
Here we see the boat being lifted at low tide, in the middle of the night.
