The West Runton elephant
The cliffs at West Runton, in Norfolk, are well known for the dark narrow band at their base, which can be seen in the picture above. This is the famous Forest Beds, the remains of a warm fauna that existed before the gravels were laid down by the subsequent glaciation.
The bones of an elephant were being washed out of the cliff, and a subsequent excavation revealed most of the rest of the body, including the tusks shown top right. This was an elephant, which had died half a million years ago.
