FAQ - Frequently asked questionsWhat is Current World Archaeology? Current World Archaeology does not exist yet, but will be a new magazine dealing with World Archaeology. It will be a sister magazine to Current Archaeology, which deals with archaeology in Britain. What will be the format? It will be of a similar format to Current Archaeology, that is trimmed A4 in size, and in full colour. What will be the scope of CWA? Our scope will be the whole world, which we will cover from the first emergence of man down to the present day. We will cover all periods and all areas. In particular we will be looking at the origins of our own civilisation, at Egypt, the Ancient Near East and the Holy Land, and Greece and Rome. How will it be available? Like Current Archaeology, it will be available mainly by subscription. It will be published 6 times a year in the alternate months to CA, so that it will be possible to subscribe to either one magazine or to both. The cost of the subscription to one magazine will be £20 (£18 if you pay by direct debit)or £30 if you subscribe to both - or just £27 if you subscribe by direct debit. Will it be available on book stalls? Initially it may be available on book stalls at a price of £4 per copy. However book stall distribution is expensive for specialist magazines and there will be substantial discount to those paying by subscription. Where will the information come from? We have excellent contacts with many organisations. We are fortunate in Britain in that we have a series of British Schools of archaeology abroad, all under the aegis of the British Academy, many of whom have offered to act as our eyes and ears. We have been gladdened by the support we have been given by many of the staff at the British Museum with whom we look forward to a close collaboration. In addition many British Universities teach world archaeology and we look forward to collaborating with them. What will be the scope of the magazine? As with Current Archaeology, the new magazine will be essentially a news magazine. We will be looking for new discoveries whenever they occur, and in particular we shall be reporting on the latest excavations. As with CA, we will be a little wary of theoretical archaeology, particularly as this tends to be politically correct. We aim to report the latest discoveries as far as possible without bias - but with enthusiasm. A special feature will be to look at well known tourist sites and to reinterpret them in the light of the latest discoveries and interpretations. Can I contribute to the magazine? Yes Please! As always the magazine will be a collaboration between the writer of the article and the source. It will be necessary to go back to the excavator on the site and to seek their approval before any article is published. But if you have seen any site that you think we should include, please email us as soon as possible with details of the site and whether you have made contact with the excavators. If we like the idea, we may ask you to take the article further. We have always been proud of our widespread collaboration in CA and we hope to take this further in CWA. What are you going to call the new magazine? We havent decided yet. At present we are alternating between Current World Archaeology, The World of Archaeology, and Archaeoworld. Please fill up the form and tell us what you think it should be. Who will subscribe to the magazine? We have 18,000 subscribers to Current Archaeology, and we hope that many of them will also subscribe to the new magazine. We will also be doing a free mailing of the first issue as widely as possible - please fill in our form in order to be included in the initial mail out. Who will be editing Current World Archaeology? The new magazine will be edited
by Andrew Selkirk. As the editor
of Current Archaeology for the past
35 years, he has immense experience
of archaeology, and knows how archaeology
works, and how to put together the
postholes and potsherds of archaeology
to form it into an exciting and
understandable story. Robert Selkirk (our son) will be the publisher of the new magazine, while Wendy Selkirk will continue the layout and business side of the whole venture.
