In mitosis the rates of cell division vary. Most bacterial cells divide every 15-20 minutes and most mammalian cells every 12-40 hours.

Interphase has three phases G1, S and G2. DNA replication takes place during the S phase and the mitochondria and chloroplasts replicate during the G2 phase. The mitochondria and chloroplasts have their own DNA.
