Banksia Integrifolia Proteaceae

Where are they found?

South western Australia contains the greatest diversity of banksias, with 60 species recorded. They are also an important part of the flora of Australia's eastern coast. Few banksias are found in the arid regions of Australia or in the rainforests of the eastern coast. Banksias can be found in most environments; the tropics, sub-alpine areas, the coast and desert areas. The banksia integrifolia grows on dunes in poor sandy soils near the coast (or in exciting greenhouses).

Characteristics

• As they grow near the coast they are tolerant of salt spray
• Can survive well in poorly drained sandy sites
• Thick waxy leaves to reduce water loss - although they do not grow in very dry conditions, this adaptation helps to cope with summer drought
• Dark green leaf with silvery underside
• Frost and wind tolerant
