The History of Telegraph Hill

I have lived in Telegraph Hill in South East London for a good many years now and have been Chairman of the Telegraph Hill Amenity Society since 1992.  Click on the picture of the telegraph (or here) to get a brief history of the area and explain what the telegraph was

The Telegraph Hill Community and Arts Festival

The community around Telegraph Hill is amazing.  In addition to the Telegraph Hill Society, there is an annual Arts Festival each spring and an active Neighbourhood Centre hosting everything from a pre-school to a yoga club.  Click logo (or here) for details.

The Telegraph Hill Society

The Society itself is involved in planning and architectural issues, traffic and transportation (railways, buses etc), roads and pavements, the local park and all environmental matters which affect local residents.   It also has an active role in researching local history and I conduct a local history tour each year as part of the Telegraph Hill Festival.

An initiative of the Society to restore the local park came to fruition after much work from the Society, the local parks users group and Lewisham Council, in the winning of a £1.2m grant from the Lottery Heritage Fund.  This has enabled the Society's ten year dream to come true:  when the work is completed, the Telegraph Hill Parks will have their original ponds, gates railings and planting schemes recreated, new paths, tennis courts and play equipment, and a full time ranger.   Click on the photograph of the park (or here) for my pages on the history of the park and the restoration work being undertake.   These pages are now being separately hosted on the www.bacchus.org.uk website together with a mirror of this page.

The Society has also recently redesigned the road crossing at New Cross Gate station; our scheme has been implemented by Transport for London and has cut both crossing times and accidents.   The 20mph speed limit for the area which has been campaigned for over 10 years has now been publicly announced and it is hoped work will start soon. Street rubbish is next on our agenda.

There is a separate campaign underway in the area to set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. More details to follow.
