It is very seldom that I recommend products on these pages but this one is so good that I make an exception.
www.Skype.com is the technology by which ordinary telephone calls can piggy back on the Internet connection. You can speak to anyone anywhere on the Internet provided they also are 'skyped'. Downloading the software is dead easy and it instals itself intelligently. THE SOFTWARE IS FREE.

In addition to the software, you need a stand alone microphone or headset with a mike which you plug into the back of the computer. If you are unsure, its probably the vacant point amongst the speaker leads. Experiment. It will do no harm.
If you already have speakers then a simple microphone will suffice.
When you want to call someone you type in their E-mail address so for example if you wanted to call me then you type in consultant@pobox.com.
Clock ''dial' and I hear a ringing tone on my speakers. I click the answer button and speak through the microphone. We chat at normal though you may find that if one person is speaking they have to stop before the other can interrupt. Not good for warring couples!
Quality of speech is excellent, quite creepily so. If you are out, then a 'missed call' appears.
This works from anywhere to anywhere, from UK to USA or New Zealand and there are NO CHARGES OR RESTRICTIONS AT ALL. You can talk for ten hours if you want. This is great especially for Broad band users. |
