
GB Womens Team
A spot for information relating to our national womens teams (Elite and Masters). This
should be a resource for all women octopush players to see what is happening at a national
level. All training sessions can be found on the Fixtures
page.
The GB Squad
Below is information regarding the selection and responsibilities of team manager,
coach and players for our national womens teams. This information was passed to people for
dissemination at the meeting of women octopush players on 19th July, 1998. More details of
this meeting and other items can be found on the
page.
GB Womens Team Manager
Selection Criteria:
- Proven planning and organisational skills.
- Ability to work with the team and coach.
- Experience of World or European championship.
- First aid.
- Access to office environment for dissemination of information.
- Experience of participating in another sport competitively.
Selection: Nomination agreed by women players in advance of AGM.
Responsibilities:
- Administration and organisation of activities for the season - pool bookings,
accommodation if appropriate, and management of finances.
- Dissemination of information - info from the coach plus training times and tournaments.
- Selection of squad.
- Fund raising - start as early as possible in the year, use contacts within the team if
relevant.
- Administration and organisation to the team to the main event i.e. World/European
Championships including;
- Travel to country.
- Transport at the event.
- Accommodation (preferably self catering).
- Travel insurance.
- Team kit (incl. costumes, 2 sets of hats, GB flags for hats, tracksuits, T-shirts),
design & colour to be agreed by the team.
- First aid.
- Ensure sticks are legal (and ensure tools and paint available if not!).
- Other roles indicated in the section below "At the event both Manger and Coach to
undertake".
It is possible to delegate certain jobs to team members. This allows the manager to
unload some of the work and makes team members feel as though they are part of a team.
GB Womens Team Coach
Selection Criteria:
- Length of time played underwater hockey.
- Experience of international competition.
- Experience of coaching at club level.
- Experience of taking part in another sport competitively.
- Any coaching qualifications gained in other sports and knowledge of sports science.
- Ability to analyse play.
- Ability to present to and control a group.
- Ability to motivate players recognising different needs.
- Ability to motivate the team as a whole.
- Organisational skills for planning the coaching and pool time.
- Access to office environment for dissemination of information.
Selection: By those people in positions of responsibility in relation to the
womens squad i.e. Captain, Vice-Captain, Team Manager, out going coach and/or current
assistant coach.
Responsibilities:
- Planning of the season's activities.
- Contents and running of all the pool sessions.
- Training plans - check progress of players.
- Selection of squad - with manager and nominated other if required.
- Individual player development.
- Team development - tactics.
- Nutrition information.
- Team psychology.
At the event both Manager and Coach to undertake:
- Organisation of rota for shopping, cooking (allowing team members to decide on what) and
washing up if staying in self catering accommodation.
- Keep distractions to a minimum e.g. visits by other teams/players so that they can focus
on the job.
- Team psychology.
- Analysis of other teams/countries play.
- Tactics.
- One to attend captains meeting with captain.
- Organisation of friendly games in training week.
- Selection of players for each game.
- Ensure arrive in plenty of time for each match.
- Warm-up - ideally the coach to undertake.
- Give in team sheets before each game - ideally the manager.
Team Members
There are 10 areas of evaluation which are stated below. These are rated by the
selector(s) on a scale of 1-10 for each player.
- General playing ability - overall rating.
- Team Player - how well the players play fits into a team formation and contributes to
the team's play as a whole.
- Positioning.
- Fitness level.
- Speed.
- Stick skills.
- Flick.
- Tenacity - aggression and adaptability to new play.
- Commitment - to the team, training and attendance at sessions.
- Ability to cope with pressure.
You will be given an overall score that will be compared.
As a team member you will be expected to undertake roles/responsibilities delegated to
you by the Team Manager (see above).
Captain and Vice-Captain
Additional criteria is used to select the captain and vice-captain.
- Experience of international competition.
- Experience of captaining at club level.
- Experience of captaining at a senior/international level.
- Ability to analyse play.
- Ability to act in a leadership role under pressure.
- Ability to show concern for all other players both in and out of the water.
- Ability to motivate players recognising different needs.
- Ability to motivate the team as a whole.
The selection is an ongoing process, the results will be known 2 months before the
European Championships.
