Windows XP: Working with the Files and
Settings Transfer Wizard (2)
Dave Cook shows you how to transfer your
personal settings and files from one PC to a new one running Windows
XP.
In
part one of this feature we discussed the benefits of using the new
Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to migrate personal settings and
files from one computer to another. This data includes documents
typically stored in the My Documents folder, as well as
user-specific settings, Internet and email settings, and application
Registry settings.
The wizard is
flexible, but it isn’t totally infallible. For example, the chances
of a successful transfer are improved if both computers are
configured in a fairly standardised fashion. It also helps if the
two computers are connected over a local network. While this method
of transfer is not essential, it is inevitably the quickest.
Start Here
Here’s how it’s
done.
·
From the new Windows XP computer, click Start and select All
Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Files And Settings Transfer
Wizard. Click Next to continue.
·
Ensure the New Computer option is selected, and click Next.
·
On the next page, select I Will Use The Wizard From The Windows XP
CD. Click Next.
·
Move to your old Windows computer and insert the Windows XP CD into
the CD-ROM drive. From the Welcome menu, select Perform Additional
Tasks, Transfer Files And Settings, and then click Next.
·
If the old computer is also running Windows XP, select the Old
Computer option and click Next. Note, though, that if the old
computer is running a version of Windows other than XP, this option
is selected automatically and you’re taken to the next page instead.
·
Select
your transfer method, which for network transfers should the Home or
Small Office Network option, and click Next.
·
At the next page, select Both Files And Settings. You’ll see a list
of items to be transferred. If you’re happy with this list, click
Next. Note that if you would like to change this list, place a
checkmark in the Let Me Select A Custom List option and follow the
screen prompts.
·
Watch out for any warnings that might appear advising you to install
certain programs (such as Winzip) on your new computer before
completing the transfer. Click Next when you’re ready to continue.
·
Return to your new computer, click Next and follow the onscreen
prompts to complete the transfer.
Finally
During the
transfer process a random password will be created. This is for
security reasons. Enter that password on the new computer to
complete the transfer. It’s as simple as that!
