Using
AOL's 1-2-3 Publish
Do you want to create your web site on AOL?
Not sure where to start? Then read Kai Chandler’s two part guide
to creating a home page with AOL’s new
1-2-3 Publish
All about 1-2-3 Publish
At the heart of the web is the hypertext markup language or
HTML. Many web designers speak HTML as if it’s their native
language but most of us use
a program that generates HTML such as AOL’s own free AOL Press or
commercial programs like Microsoft Front Page, Allaire HomeSite or
Macromedia Dreamweaver.
If you want to create a page on the web in the
shortest possible time then 1-2-3 Publish is for you. There’s no
software to buy or download as it’s all run from AOL.
Here’s what you do:
Step
One
Select Keyword 123 Publish
Step Two
Select the type of page you want to create: the list
of templates ranges from My Art Gallery, to Cooking – twelve
choices in all but a bit of a limitation if you want to do something
different. Still, it’s a start and you can always change it later.
Each template contains half a dozen related styles.
Step
Three
Here’s where you can start to become creative –
why not add colours and logos to you’re your page look the way you
want? Also here you can add any text that you want to appear on your
page. You can also bring in text from a word-processor (see text box
for an explanation of how to do this.)
Other
fields in 1-2-3 Publish let you enter any favourite web site links
that your readers may be interested in. Finally, add your email
address so visitors can send you mail. Don’t forget to enter a
complete email address eg. PPCKAI@AOL.COM.
If you forget "AOL.COM" it may not work!
Step Four

When you’ve entered all the information you want
to see on your web site, you can select Preview My Page at the
bottom of the page to see what your page will look like. If you want
to make any changes just select Modify to go back and change it
Step Five
When you are happy with the content of your page
it’s time to upload it to AOL’s web server. Just click Save to
do this.
If you wondering what your web page address or
URL is, then watch out for an automatically generated email from AOL
that tells everything you need. You can click on the link to visit
your page. Then click Favourites to add the address to your
Favourites, or to email it to friends and family.
Your
web page will have an address of the following format:
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/<screen-name>/myhomepage/<subject-type>.html
where
your screen name and the type of subject are included in the
address.
In
Part Two we look at how to modify or delete your page using 123
Publish. Web publishing has never been so easy!
