The Meadows

Urmston Meadows is an expanse of green lying between the river Mersey and the urban housing of Urmston & Flixton. Until the local government changes of 1974, the Mersey formed the border between Lancashire and Cheshire. It is popular for walking, riding, walking dogs and is also used by trail bikes and mountain bike riders. There are several stables and some remaining farms here. The Meadows forms part of the Mersey Valley scheme and there are several walks and rides marked out as well as numerous young trees which one day will form part of the Red Rose forest. This page will try to give a flavour of the Meadows throughout the year from the muds of February through the yellows of autumn. My photos are particularly concerned with those sections reached from Cedar Grove, from Eeasbrook and from Meadowgate.
The end of winter near Cedar Drive In early March the grass is growing but the trees are still dormant. This small copse and pond lie midway between the Cedar Drive left path and the "boundary" bank.
Meadowgate is opposite the Lord Nelson pub and leads from Stretford Road to the Meadows! This view shows the end of the public highway and the start of the paths and private road leading to the main meadows. Just beyond the white gates is a small bridge over the Eeas which eventually feeds into the Mersey. Further still into the photo are stables and a stile/cattle grid. Meadowgate and onwards
View of St Clements Taking the left road from the tree-lined road leads towards the river path and this photo shows the view across the riding area towards the back of Manor Court and St Clements Church
The road from the Eeasbrook entrance passes the scout hut and then follows the course of the Eeas as it leads towards the Mersey Along Eeasbrook
The Mersey after heavy rains This picture was taken on 5th March 2000 and shows the Mersey at a high level
