May Day Steam 1st-3rd May 2004

These photos show some of the events at the May Day Steam in 2004 ( They cannot convey the bustle, noise and smoke though ).

All these photos were taken between 11am and 1pm on Sunday 2nd May 2004 by Douglas I. Smith.

The Engineering tent

Immediately on the left after the Chassen Road entrance is the first aid point and a book stall and then the Engineering Tent which contains several engineering societies and some craft stalls.
Model Aircraft from Parkway These planes are on the left of the entrance
and are from the Parkway Model Aircraft Flying Club.
To the right are Meccano modellers including an
automated pattern drawing machine
( which produces Spirograph-like designs ).

The Steam Engines

The main road in the park is surrounded by charity and engineering stalls and by ice cream and hot and cold food stands.
Parallel with the road is the row of Steam Engines.

Smaller and static engines

Around the rest of the field are fair organs, miniature engines, static engines, agricultural tractors, motor cars, motor cycles, commercial vehicles and military vehicles!

The Model Railway

Unlike the other parts of the event, the model railway track is a permanent part of Chassen Park ( officially it is called Abbotsfield Park but few use that name ) and indeed is regularly used on Sundays. It was built and is operated by members of the Urmston and District Model Engineering Society.

Soem of the engines of the model railway undergoing mechanical checks and repairs By the society's building lies the track and an area for mechanical checkovers or repairs.
There is a signalling system around the track and here at the station is a moveable section of track allowing access to the main single line. At the station
Coming out of the station Just after the station, trains have to pass beneath one of the entrances to the field..
