This museum, a living museum
with a unique collection of boats, exhibitions,

is dedicated to Britain's waterway history

A garden of notable international repute,
it continues in excellence in research,
conservation and public education.

Ness Botanic Gardens was born
of one man's passionate interest in plants
and his desire to share that interest with others.
When the Liverpool cotton merchant, Arthur Kilpin Bulley,
began to create a garden in 1898,
part of which he opened to local residents,
he laid the foundations of one of the major
botanic gardens in the United Kingdom,
a learning garden with plant introductions
from all over the world.

On his behalf, pioneering plant collectors
scoured the temperate regions of the Far East
for alpine and hardy plants
which could be cultivated in our climate.

In 1948, after his death, in 1942,
the gardens were bequeathed
to the University of Liverpool
by his daughter Lois Bulley.
