SATURDAY,
1 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be in Rome to address a conference of the
Italian Democrats who are now the main party of
opposition to Mr Berlusconi’s government.
He will speak about the concerns of many
Europeans over dominant ownership of the media.
MONDAY,
3 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be hosting a dinner for the ambassadors of
12 countries who have applied to join the EU.
These are the Central and Eastern European
countries of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia,
Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, the Slovak
Republic and Slovenia, and two Mediterranean countries,
Malta and Cyprus.
TUESDAY,
4 JUNE
In
Brussels, Graham Watson will be meeting Migyur Dorjee,
deputy envoy of the Dalai Lama.
Graham
will be travelling to Copenhagen for a series of
meetings with the Danish government.
Denmark, which has a Liberal-led government, will
take over presidency of the European Union on 1st July.
WEDNESDAY,
5 JUNE
In
Brussels, Graham Watson will be speaking about European
defence at a cross-party pressure group meeting.
Graham will be discussing the relative roles of
NATO and the EU’s Common Defence Policy.
THURSDAY,
6 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be having a breakfast meeting with Nigel
Sheinwald, the UK ambassador to the EU.
Graham
will host a reception for the launch by Will Hutton of
his new book, The World We’re In.
In his book, Hutton argues that the US model of
capitalism has been oversold and the European model
undersold.
The author is a former editor in chief of The
Observer and is a governor of the London School of
Economics.
In
the evening, Graham will be hosting a dinner for members
of the Convention which is looking at ways of reforming
and restructuring the European Union prior to
enlargement.
FRIDAY,
7 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be returning to the UK where he will be
dealing with a large
amount of casework on behalf of his constituents. |

MONDAY,
10 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be in Strasbourg for a week-long session of
parliamentary debates and committee meetings.
Graham
will be hosting a visit to Strasbourg by a group of
journalists from the South West.
TUESDAY,
11 JUNE
As
part of his continuing campaign for greater transparency
in EU decision making, Graham Watson will be meeting the
Spanish Foreign Minister, Mr Piqué and European
Parliament president, Pat Cox, to negotiate an agreement
allowing a committee of senior MEPs to have access to
classified information for purposes of parliamentary
scrutiny.
Graham
will be voting on a package of measures to streamline
the way the European Parliament works.
Graham
will meet the Israeli ambassador, Harry Kney-Tal to
discuss the events in the Middle East.
The
European Parliament’s foot and mouth inquiry will be
on the agenda when Graham meets Tim Bennett, chairman of
the National Farmers Union.
In
the evening, Graham will be meeting European Commission
president Romano Prodi to discuss enlargement of the EU.
The European Liberal Democratic Group of MEPs,
which Graham leads, is holding a series of meetings this
week on the theme of Reuniting Europe, attended by MPs
from the applicant states.
WEDNESDAY,
12 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be meeting the Vice-President of the Russian
Duma, Mr Lukin.
Graham
will be having discussions with representatives of
parliaments from the EU applicant countries and will
later be speaking in a European Parliament debate on
enlargement.
THURSDAY,
13 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be in London to present prizes in a Law
Society competition for the best examples of pro bono
work by lawyers.
One winner is an entrant from Devon – details
cannot yet be made available.
FRIDAY,
14 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be campaigning in Kingswood, Bristol, in
support of Jim Corrigan, the Liberal Democrat candidate
in a by-election for Kings Chase ward of South
Gloucestershire Unitary Authority.
Graham
will be attending a meeting of the South West
Constitutional Convention, which is campaigning for
regional government for the South West.
SATURDAY,
15 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be opening the Liberal Democrats Western
Counties regional conference, being held at Ridgeway
School, Wroughton, Swindon.
Graham
will be assisting Christian Aid workers in the
collection of action pledges in High Street, Salisbury. |

MONDAY,
17 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be in Sweden to address a conference of the
Centre Party, a member of the European Liberal, Democrat
and Reform (ELDR) group.
Graham, ELDR leader in the European Parliament,
will speak about the challenges posed by EU enlargement
plans.
TUESDAY,
18 JUNE
In
Brussels, Graham Watson will be receiving
representatives of the Kabile minority in Algeria to
discuss human rights issues.
WEDNESDAY,
19 JUNE
In
Brussels, Graham Watson will have a breakfast meeting
with representatives of the Nordic Council of
Scandinavian countries to gauge public opinion in Norway
and Iceland towards membership of the EU.
Opinion in both countries has been moving
strongly in favour of joining.
Graham
will be discussing the future of European defence with
Javier Solana, the EU’s High Representative for the
Common Foreign and Security Policy and former NATO
Secretary General.
Graham
will be meeting representatives of the British Chamber
of Commerce and will be discussing the benefits of the
euro for British businesses.
Graham
will later be speaking to the US Chamber of Commerce
about the need for economic liberalisation in Europe.
He will be critical of the US imposition of
tariffs on steel imports.
THURSDAY,
20 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be travelling to Seville, Spain, to host and
address a meeting of Liberal party leaders from the 15
EU member states.
The meeting, attended by Romano Prodi, president
of the European Commission, and the prime ministers of
Belgium, Denmark, Slovenia, Estonia and Latvia, will
discuss the agenda for the Seville heads of government
conference.
Graham will propose a joint declaration on
immigration.
He will highlight the need for a calm and
rational debate and for a common EU immigration policy.
FRIDAY,
21 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be returning to the South West to deal with
casework on behalf of his constituents.
At
6.30pm, Graham will be taking part in an open meeting on
the cost of the foot and mouth crisis attended by
members of the European Parliament’s foot and mouth
committee of inquiry who are currently visiting Wales,
Devon and Gloucestershire.
The meeting is at Hotel Premier Lodge in Alveston
(Bristol North).
At
8.30pm, Graham will further discuss the crisis with the
committee members at a meeting hosted by Gloucestershire
County Council at Tortworth Court Four Pillars Hotel at
Wotton-under-Edge, South Gloucestershire.

MONDAY,
24 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be in Copenhagen where he will be meeting
leaders of the Liberal Danish government.
Denmark takes over the presidency of the EU from
Spain in July.
On the agenda will be the results of the European
Council meeting of heads of state in Seville.
TUESDAY,
25 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be travelling to Helsinki in Finland for a
two-day meeting of the European Liberal, Democratic and
Reform group which he leads.
The meeting will discuss issues on the agenda for
the European Parliament’s July session in Strasbourg,
including the labelling of foods produced using
genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Graham will be
meeting the prime minister of Finland, Paavo Lipponen.
WEDNESDAY,
26 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be in Finland where he will be meeting
political and business leaders to discuss industrial,
environmental and social issues.
THURSDAY,
27 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be travelling to Tallinn in Estonia where he
will discuss the Seville summit with the Estonian prime
minister.
Estonia’s progress towards joining the EU will
also be on the agenda.
FRIDAY,
28 JUNE
Graham
Watson will be returning to Helsinki for further talks
with Finnish government leaders. |
