The ELDR Group has 53 members
making it the third largest political group in the
European Parliament. Within the ELDR Group, the UK
Liberal Democrats, with 11 members, are the largest
national delegation.
The ELDR Party is a pan-European political force. It
was set up in 1976 as the European Federation of
Liberal, Democrat and Reform parties to prepare for
the first direct elections to the European
Parliament in 1979. Today, the ELDR Party has 25
member parties and 13 affiliates from across Europe.
The ELDR Party fought the last European elections on
the basis of the Manifesto adopted at the Berlin
Congress in April 1999. The view the Manifesto,

ELDR is firmly resolved to further deepen, reinforce
and enlarge the European Union. We wish to
strengthen Europe's economy, to modernise Europe's
democracy and to invest in Europe's security. Our
aim is a larger, democratic, accountable and more
open European Union which is empowered to take
decisions where only a Union-level action can lead
to effective results, but is committed to
decentralisation of power on other issues.
