The European Commission's decision today to
launch legal action against former Commissioner
Edith Cresson to deprive her of her pension was
welcomed by the European Liberal Democrats.
Reacting to the Commission announcement, European
Liberal Democrat (ELDR) Group leader Graham Watson
MEP said:
"I welcome the European Commission's
decision to take legal action against former
Commissioner Edith Cresson. It is important that she
be held to account for her actions before the Court.
This reinforces the principle of individual
responsibility of Commissioners which we have always
strongly advocated."
"This decision also vindicates the
position the European Liberal Democrats and
Parliament as a whole took with regard to the
Commission at the time, which was forced to resign
rather than let an individual Commissioner face the
music."
ELDR Budgetary Control spokesman Jan Mulder
added:
"It's now up to the European Court of
Justice to give the final verdict. Today's decision
will contribute to a new management culture within
the Commission, and reassure both its staff and the
citizens of Europe that change is taking hold and
will continue."
