GIVING NOTICE

Teachers give notice with effect from the end of a school term and are usually required to give two months' notice, except in the Summer term when 3 months is required.

• To leave at the end of the Autumn term (31st December), you have to give notice by 31st October.
• To leave at the end of the Spring term (30th April), you have to give notice by the last day in February.
• To leave at the end of the Summer term (31st August), you have to give notice by May 31st.

The notice period can often be shortened by agreement. Contact the NUT Office if you have a problem.

The requirements for Headteachers is that they give one extra month's notice on top of the above.

A teacher who has worked continuously for the same employer for more than two years, whether on fixed term contracts or not, is entitled to redundancy pay at the end of their employment. After one year's service the teacher gains employment rights, in particular, the right to claim unfair dismissal. There may be variations to this with temporary contracts issued without an end date, such as maternity leave replacements. Contact the office for help in these cases.
