It's that time of year again when teachers unfortunate enough to work in badly ventilated buildings start to suffer. Although there is as yet no legal maximum temperature for classrooms, the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 say, “During working hours, the temperature in all workplaces inside buildings shall be reasonable.”

Clearly, when teachers are consistently suffering from headaches or other symptoms of ill-health as a result of high temperatures, it is not reasonable, and the regulations go on to say that “all reasonable steps should be taken to achieve a reasonably comfortable temperature.”

This years NUT Conference called for a maximum upper limit of 26C, which follows the line taken by the World Health Organisation.
