Ealing Liberal Democrats

Equal Opportunities

Introduction

Equal Opportunities is at the heart of Liberal Democrat policy and we will campaign for the fair treatment of all individuals and communities.

Ensure equal opportunities within the council

We will update and monitor the recruitment and employment policies of the council so that council staff reflect the gender balance and ethnic makeup of the borough.

Reduce bullying, harassment and discrimination

We will campaign to reduce the incidences of bullying, harassment and discrimination to council staff, those within Ealing’s schools and residents of Ealing.

Conduct a regular equalities audit

We will continue to conduct a regular equalities audit and work to improve those areas that are highlighted as being weaknesses.

Produce council literature in other languages

We will produce council literature in Braille and a variety of recorded forms and languages as well as English.

Provide and enforce correct use of disabled parking spaces

We will make sure disabled parking places are more suitably located within a new development by ensuring that this is requested within a planning application. We will also campaign to ensure that that there is adequate disabled parking facilities within the borough and that disabled parking spaces are strictly enforced.

Ensure that all council buildings have access for the disabled

We will convert all council buildings so that disabled access is possible. This is in addition to the requirement that any new council buildings must have access for disabled people. Still only one of the 80 council’s public buildings is accessible by the disabled.

Campaign to make all stations have access for the disabled

We will campaign for all Ealing’s train and tube stations to be made accessible to the elderly, disabled and infirm (by installing lifts and ramps). This is especially required at Ealing Broadway station.

Stamp out homophobia

We will introduce measures to stamp out homophobia of all types.

Facilities for the blind and disabled at road crossings

We will increase the number of pedestrian crossings which have facilities for the blind or the disabled.

Local advice shops

We will develop advice shops‚ in all the town centres within the borough of Ealing (Southall, Greenford etc) so that advice is available to residents nearer where they live. These advice shops will help to inform and educate residents about the diverse range of council services that exist in Ealing, and who they should contact when they need help or assistance.
