A weekend in the North of England not accompanied by my best-beloved daughter. Who after all is now seventeen years old and has Things to Do. Phone call about half way through, she's with friends somewhere, "I've got no money and my Oyster card has run out and there is no food in the house!"
The money wasn't strictly true, but no food in the house?
When I got back I wrote down what was in the kitchen
- Starchy staples
- Bread (about four slices worth - but there was enough money to buy more!)
- Cornmeal (almost all of a 1.5kg bag)
- Cream crackers (a few, probably not as crackly as they onec were)
- Flour (about a fifth of a 1.5 kilo packet)
- Instant egg noodles
- Instant egg noodles with green stuff
- Oatcakes (about a quarter of a box)
- Oatmeal (about a kilo in a jar and a kilo bag unopened)
- Oven chips, frozen
- Pasta (2.5 kilos of three different types, white, wholemeal, and multicoloured)
- Pearl barley (small unopnmened packet)
- Rice (most of a 5 kilo bag)
- Rye cripsbread (about a third each of two poackets of different kinds)
- Legumes
- Baked beans (can)
- Chickpeas (1 large can, 1 small)
- Cowpeas (1 can)
- Frozen peas (a few left in bag in freezer)
- Instant felafal mix.
- Mung beans (dried)
- Peanut butter (two different kinds)
- Pease pudding (2 small cans)
- Processed peas (2 cans)
- Red azuki beans (dried)
- Red Kidney beans (1 can)
- Split peas (dried)
- Tempeh (one packet)
- Tofu (two packets)

- Canned curried green stuff of some kind
- Canned stuffed vine leaves
- Carrot (only one left)
- Garlic, at least three heads
- Mixed chopped veg, frozen
- Onions, some
- Potatoes, a handful
- Shallots, one or two
- Spring onions, a bunch
- Sweetcorn, frozen

- Butter (1 pack open, 1 unopened)
- Cheese: Cheddar (only a sliver remaining, but there had been a lot more when I left on Friday), Halloumi (a little), Lancashire (unopened packet), Mascarpone (unopened packet), Parmesan (a little), Something French and soft and smelly (unopened packet), Wensleydale (about a quarter of a kilo)
- Corn oil (almost full litre bottle)
- Eggs, a couple
- Margarine (about a fifth of a 500g tub)
- Milk, at least one unopened bottle of semi-skimmed
- Olive oil (almost full litre bottle)
- Other stuff
- Chocolate, (some of three partially eaten bars, including Green and Black organic)
- Cocoa, Cadbury's and Green and Black
- Coconut milk
- Coffee (Instant and ground)
- Fruit juice
- Instant mashed potato (its hard to imagine me ever buying this - Someone Else must have)
- Instant vegetable soup (at least two packets)
- Jam (two different kinds, but one tub a bit old and manky)
- Marmite
- Olive paste
- Organic fruit and nut bars (two in a box)
- Pappadums (uncooded, suitalble for frying or microwave)
- Pickled something-offensive-looking (two jars)
- Sauerkraut (mildly manky)
- Tea (four different kinds)
- Tinned fish and seafood: at least twenty cans including sardines, pilchards, salmon, mackerel, tuna, cod roe, crab, in about that prder (She's a vegetarian so these don't really count)
- Tinned fruit (mandarin slices, mangoes, maybe some peaches
- Vegan sausages, frozen, two different kinds, at least a dozen remaining
- Herbs, spices, flavourings
- at least two jars of proprietary tomato-based sauce for pasta
- Bisto
- Brown sauce
