RESEARCH ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE, GEOTECHNICS RESEARCH GROUP
1998 - date

Researched the suitability of various brine/clay/cement mixtures for use in underground waste placement for Cleveland Potash Ltd

Researched the characterisation of the effects of resin injection on the post-fracture behaviour of rock, using laboratory techniques, as part of a European Coal & Steel Commission contract.

Worked with others to develop research proposals for submission to the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council and similar bodies.

Lectured to second-year undergraduates in Rock Mechanics and set and marked examinations. Assessed final-year student projects.

Assisted in restoring the School's RDP-Howden stiff press to full functionality and developed the system to extend its testing and data-logging capabilities

DOCTORAL RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP
1995 - 98

Developed a simple, energy-based index to classify rock and similar materials for comminution behaviour in crushing plant.

Developed novel testing methods and a database of rock properties to allow the improved design, development and specification of crushing plant

Wrote QA procedures and trained other students in the use of laboratory equipment.

MANAGER OF ROCK PROPERTIES LABORATORY
1991 - 94

Responsible for a specialist team working on the preparation, testing and subsequent analysis of rock cores for geotechnical purposes.

Re-established the credibility of a run down testing facility and set up an on-going maintenance programme for the equipment.

Development of multi-stage triaxial test, both equipment and procedures

Technical Manager on NAMAS application for the laboratory, writing manuals & procedures

Trained and motivated five members of staff.

After a major fire, directed and controlled the establishment of alternative testing facilities.
 

Achievement: Increased the laboratory throughput and profitability by 60% within two years.

ROOF BOLTING ENGINEER
1989 - 91

Presented roofbolting as a technique to mine management and mineworkers.

Trained mineworkers in the principles and installation of roofbolts both in the classroom and underground.

Implemented monitoring systems as required and analysed the results

Responsible for specification of new equipment, arranging appropriate test work and liaison with manufacturers.

Arranged and supervised underground trials of new equipment prior to approval.

Responsible for the Acceptance of the products and monitoring their utilisation thereafter.

Joint author of a book, published by Haynes/Foulis, on post-War Matchless single- cylinder models.

Researched, produced and published a document on colour schemes for AJS and Matchless motorcycles from 1946 to 1968.

Keeping and breeding of freshwater tropical fish, especially South American catfish.

Home computers, especially amateur communications.
