The above consutation report was distributed by the Ministry of Defence from 14th February 2001. Over 300 copies of the document were distributd to MP's, individuals, groups and organisations that expressed an interest in the subject. Seventy-eight replies were received, including one from the Nautical Archaeology Society. Report of the public consultation.
The result of the consultation process is as follows:
- 16 vessels have been proposed for designation as Controlled Sites. A Controlled Site is a restrictive designation, requiring licensing of certain activities within the exclusion zone and knowledge of precise co-ordinates.
- additional designations as Controlled Sites will be made if vessels are subejct to sustained disturbance or are considered dangerous.
- 5 vessels that lie in internatinal waters have been proposed for designation as Protected Places. A Protected Place is one where activities are permitted in the vicinity of a vessel, on a look but don't touch basis. Knowledge of precise co-ordinates is not required, only the name of the vessel.
- a rolling programme of identification and assessment against the criteria be established to designate all other vessels, in military service when lost, as Protected Places.
