NAS Part 3 Underwater Archaeological Excavation course

The NAS Underwater Archaeological Excavation course runs from 13th to 17th June 2005 at Fort Cumberland and Horsea Island Dive Centre, Portsmouth. It is an opportunity for participants to gain practical experience in underwater excavation with a water-dredge and air-lift and the use of full-face mask with communications facilities.

Please note: It is a pre-requisite for this course that participants have completed the NAS Part I Certificate and have diving qualifications equivalent to CMAS 2* plus 10 UK dives.

A second course will be run from the 10th-14th October 2005, but book early as it sells fast!

Monday 13th June
AM: Fort Cumberland - theory session on full-face mask & kit, communications procedure, life-line signals, intro. to survey task
PM: Horsea Island - Simple survey task with full-face mask

Tuesday 14th June
AM: HORSEA ISLAND ALL DAY - theory - excavation technique - use of excavation tools, excavation logistics (risk assessments, operations log etc)- setting up grid, water dredge and airlift - excavation practice

Wednesday 15th June
HORSEA ALL DAY: Excavation with water dredge and airlift

Thursday 16th June
HORSEA ALL DAY: Excavation with waterdredge and airlift

Friday 17th June
AM: Horsea Island - Finish excavation - recovery of kit
PM: Fort Cumberland - Excavation report / results / debrief
