Annual Conference of the Severn Estuary Levels Research Committee
30th October 2004 'Boats, Harbours, Stone and Wood'


The annual conference of the Severn Estuary Levels Research Committee will be held at the Drill Hall, Chepstow. The guest speaker is Ole Crumlin Pedersen, Europe's foremost maritime archaeologist, presenting his experience of dealing with Denmark's numerous maritime discoveries. Local presentations include the Newport Boat, the historic harbours of S.E. Wales, the woodland history of the Wye Valley and recent work on Mesolithic sites in the inter-tidal zone. Tickets are £10 in advance and £12 on the door.

Global perspectives on the archaeology of islands

To be held at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and jointly organised by the Department of Anthropology, University of Auckland and the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. The objective of this conference is to bring together researchers actively engaged in the study of islands and island societies throughout the world to define common ground, to compare approaches, perspectives and the results of recent research, and to promote the investigation of the archaeology of the world's islands. Titles and abstracts (ca. 150 words) are due by 1.3.04.
