Council Tax: If You're Poor You Pay More

20.11.03

Edward Davey MP, Liberal Democrat ODPM Shadow can today reveal that across England the poorest pay more in Council Tax than the better off.

Commenting on the latest figures, Mr Davey said:

"These figures prove what most of us have known for a long time: If you are on a low income, the Council Tax hits you hardest.

"In cities like London, Manchester and Exeter people on the lowest earnings are paying almost twice as much of their income in Council Tax than the better off"

"The Government must finally realise that this tax is not only hated, but unfair. It's time to scrap the Council Tax and replace it with a system of fair local taxation."
