Wembley campaign

FootballFootballFootballFootballFootball

I have written to the FA and the Government giving my backing to the bid for a new national stadium at Wembley.

And I now want to hear your views on the proposals.

Background to the proposals

Since the collapse of the FA's original Wembley stadium proposals due to funding difficulties, a number of other cities have entered the race to house the national football stadium. Most recently, Birmingham and Coventry have published proposals to build national football stadiums.

A report on all the bids, produced by businessman Patrick Carter, was given to Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell 10 days ago. However, the Government has made it clear that the final decision will lie with the FA. A decision is expected towards the end of the month.

You can read about the proposals online from Birmingham and from Wembley.

You can also visit BBC Online for an independent review of the options.

Why I back the Wembley bid

I felt that I had to back the Wembley bid because it has so much going for it and for London.

Unlike the bids from the Midlands' cities, the Wembley site has already been purchased and any building will not encroach on the green belt. History is also on Wembley's side and transport links to the Stadium are set to be dramatically improved.

Wembley has been the setting of so many great footballing moment - not least, the victories by Kingstonian in two FA Umbro Cup Finals. It would be a scandal if such footballing traditional history were to be lost.
