Safer Stations Campaign
In 1998 I set up a Safer Stations Working Group. Since then the group has
had a number of meetings. Their first major success was
getting cctv and help Thanks to their work the Borough leads the way in the whole of the South West Trains area with 20% of all officially accredited safer stations. The accredited stations, Surbiton and Kingston, are, we hope, to be followed by six other stations which are set for improvements as a result of the groups efforts. Chessington branch next The next step is to undertake a safety audit with officers from the British Transport Police and South West Trains along all the Chessington branch line stations. I am delighted to be able to tell you that all the resulting safety improvement proposals have either been implemented or are scheduled for attention. Latest on the 'steaming' gang Recently I received confirmation from the Chief Superintendent of British Transport Police that criminals from the two Chessington Branch line steaming gang have been caught and charged. I was concerned when the steaming incidents happened that the trains in the area may have been seen by criminals as a soft touch. Therefore, I held urgent meetings with officers to ensure no effort was spared in catching those responsible. The recent high visibility policing and intelligence - led detective work has brought some good results, and I congratulate the police. The fact they have caught
a large number of the criminals is excellent news. This
should make criminals operating in the Borough think
twice before taking advantage of local residents. |
