Red & Ted's RoadShow:

There's no doubting who Red and Ted are after one look at the game. There they are sat at the back of the playfield looking right at you. But even then, with this being a wide-bodied game, they don't dominate the action.

Like Rudy, their cousin, Red & Ted are fully animating (called PinMation), with talking mouths, directional eyes and blinking eyelids. And boy do they talk! There's a near constant chatter between the two through the game, but it never becomes irritating, merely reflective of the mood of the game.

So what's the game all about then?

It's based on a trip across the USA from the east coast to the west, visiting various cities along the way, collecting souvenirs and generally causing as much mayhem and destruction as possible to a country & western soundtrack provided by Carlene Carter (whoever she is) who also does the voice of Red.

The map is shown on the playfield, and you travel by collecting miles from various shots. Arrive at a city and start the mode. There are 18 in total, so you're never short of something to do.

Reach the west coast and battle either aliens, monsters of an earthquake. If you can hide in the shelter then you're in for a Super PayDay - a 3 or 4 ball multiball where everything is lit and your score shoots up.

When I say that everything is lit, I mean that there's an awful lot to be lit because RoadShow is not short of features in addition to it's 18 different modes.

Above the map is the Blast Wheel, a ring of 12 different awards to be collected, and on the far left is the Flying Rocks ramp for 4 more awards and a new mode.

Then we have Bob's Bunker at the top left where souvenirs can be bought for points. Many souvenirs are associated with cities (an air freshener with New York, suntan lotion with Miami for example). Visit the city and collect the souvenir and it's worth big points at the end of every ball. Some are worthless however, so it's important to know.

We're running out of space and we've not even talked about multiball, or the Blast-Zone, nor Radio Riot, Bad Weather, or even the powerful shaker motor. But that's RoadShow. There's just so much packed into this game that there's always a choice of features to go for.

It's also chock full of great humour and funny quotes and the shaker motor gets plenty of use as toll booths crumble, taxis get crushed and toilets explode (well that's one taken care of).

Unfortunately, with so much in the game I guess they ran out of either time or ROM space resulting in a rather disappointing display of "WOW!" when you complete all the cities, and nothing for collecting all the blast wheel awards. Still, those minor niggles aside, RoadShow quite literally rocks.
