Here's a look around the room where we make graphics for Working Lunch and Newsnight. It's in Television Centre, West London and was opened in October 1998.

It really is what it looks like - a vertically mounted video camera with some lights.

It's used for taking in real objects, pictures and artwork for further treatment, or - with the use of coloured gels - a completed image can be created.

Quantel Pictureframe - a store and replay device for still images. Most static graphics are transmitted from this device.

It has 6 separate outputs, all with alpha channels and 2 dedicated playout panels.

It's also networked with other Quantel kit for sharing of images.

Our editing suite with a Sony 9100 edit controller on the left and an Abekas 8150 vision mixer on the right.

The 9100 controls all the tape machines and disk recorders, making sure they all run in sync when doing edits.

The vision mixer composites the various graphic bits in real time, performing mixes, wipes and 3 key levels.

Our principal recording medium - Betacam SP tape. Despite the rise of various digital tape formats we still mainly use analogue Betacam SP. For graphics use we also use D1 digital tape and Digital Betacam as well as digital disk recorders.

This rack has 1 recorder (bottom) and 2 players. There is one other recorder in the area.

A Yamaha O2R digital audio mixer for our editing/composition area. It can be fully automated for recording final mixdowns and can be controlled by the Sony 9100 edit controller.

The faders are motorised which spooks most people the first time they see it.

A Quantel Harriet - quite old now, but is a painting and animation device operated with a pen and tablet and forms the basis for many of our graphics.

It has 13 second of animation but is being replaced by HALs which handle multi-layered video clips much more easily.

The Questech SSVR on the left stores and composites moving pictures acting as 3 players and a recorder simultaneously, storing video in RAM.

The Charisma on the right manipulates moving images by distorting them in numerous ways. It is the standard video effects device in the BBC. This one can also wrap video into various curved shapes and explode them too.
