Joseph Mossforth Neatby was born on the 2nd December 1830 in the Village of Worsborough, just south of Barnsley. He was the oldest son of William & Ann Neatby who had married in Worsborough earlier that year.

He was baptised at Worsborough on the 23rd January 1831.

In the 1851 Census he appears as a 20-year old Timber Merchant living with his parents at Market Street in Barnsley.

He married ELIZA SHAW on the 20th August 1857 in the Rotherham registration district, nothing is known about Eliza other she was born around 1835 in Sheffield.

Joseph was involved in his father's business as a Timber Merchant (William Neatby & Sons & Co). He was also described in the 1861 census as a 30-year old Timber Merchant and Local Preacher living at 22 Wellington Street Barnsley with his 25-year old wife Eliza.

He does not appear in the 1871 census with his family, now at 22 Market Street Barnsley.

Later in the 1881 census he was described as a Timber & Slate Merchant & Saw Mill proprietor living at "The Hawthorns"

Joseph died on the 4th May 1900 in Barnsley. He was described as a gentleman of "The Hawthorns" Barnsley when probate was awarded to his son Edwin and son-in-law Job Doughty at Wakefield on the 18th June 1900. The net value of his estate was £4227. In his will dated 8th August 1899 Joseph left the use of his house and possessions to wife Eliza during her life. After the death of Eliza, Edwin was to take his pick of furniture, except the brass bedstead to the value of £30, the daughter Lucy to take the rest of the furniture. The estate was to be placed in trust, with the income to his wife Eliza.

Eliza appears in the 1901 Census of Barnsley as a 66 year old "Living On Own Means" and birthplace is stated as Barnsley.

Eliza died in Barnsley aged 70 in 1905.
