Welcome

A big thank you to the many thousands of Londoners who supported the Liberal Democrats on Thursday May 1st.

More than 275,000 people voted to re-elect me to the London Assembly, along with colleagues, Dee Doocey and Caroline Pidgeon. Over 330,000 voted for Lib Dem candidates in the local constituencies.

Our mayoral candidate, Brian Paddick (pictured right), fought a strong campaign on the issues, although the media focused more on personalities than policies. Nonetheless nearly 900,000 Londoners supported Brian with their first or second preference votes.

As Liberal Democrats on the London Assembly, we will be fearless in holding the new mayor to account and will continue to raise the issues that Londoners care about, like government closure of local post offices.

Fed up with 'freesheet' litter on the trains and tube? That's not surprising!

Did you know that thelondonpaper and London Lite are responsible for putting four tonnes of waste onto London's streets everyday? The growing number of 'free' publications being handed out is causing a massive environmental nuisance and Mike Tuffrey wants the publishers to pay for their clean-up costs. Sustainable 'smart card' to help Londoners do their bit for the environment

Mike Tuffrey is launching a plan for a new reward card that will encourage sustainable consumption in London. Most supermarket cards aim to get us to buy more, and 'reward' us with free flights and the like. But why not earn points by recycling more or switching to renewable energy, and redeem them on activity which doesn't leave a large carbon footprint? Download Mike's draft consultation paper and help him improve the plan.  Sustainable Reward Card (PDF download 100k)

Making the news

Plan to improve accountability of mayor's political staff

London Assembly Liberal Democrats have put forward five proposals to improve accountability in the Mayor's Office following months of controversy surrounding the behaviour of some of the mayor's key advisers. "Ken Livingstone's cavalier dismissal of any questioning about how he runs London through his unelected political appointees has not just fatally damaged his own reputation; it has sullied the name of good government in London," says Mike Tuffrey. . . . . Call for District Auditor to investigate improper funding claims

As long ago as last December, the London Assembly backed a call by Mike Tuffrey for an independent investigation into allegations by the Evening Standard and the BBC. If the mayor had listened, such a course of action could have reassured London council tax payers about how their money was being spent and might have exonerated any individuals who have had their integrity called into question, says Mike. . . . . . NHS taking baby-steps on climate change

Action by the public sector on climate change on London is very variable, with local councils leading the way and the NHS seen as laggards, an inquiry by the London Assembly has found.  Mike Tuffrey comments that the government's PFI funding rules lock in obsolete sustainability standards on new construction projects. . . .
