28th Oct: Local MP reveals the top five pupil premium beneficiaries

Local MP, Norman Baker, has today revealed the top five local schools which will be the biggest beneficiaries of the Pupil Premium, secured by the Lib Dems in government, and between them will receive nearly £150,000.

The Pupil Premium is allocated based on pupils who receive free school meals and is funding on top of the existing funding provided to schools. Schools will be free to spend the additional funding as they choose to raise the achievement of disadvantage pupils. It was a Lib Dem manifesto commitment that has now been brought in under the coalition.

The top five.

  1. Priory School will receive £45,384 extra
  2. Ringmer Community College will receive £37,576 extra
  3. Chailey School will receive £25,376 extra
  4. Wallands Community Primary School will receive £18,544 extra
  5. Pells Church of England Primary School will receive £17,080 extra

The schools are receiving a share of the £4.5million fund from the government for 2011/12 which recently rose by £1million from £3.5million, after additional funding was provided. The Lewes constituency will received around £600,000 of that fund.

Norman says: "It is of course great to be able to say that my constituency will receive £600,000 from the Premium, but it is even better to be able to see, specifically, just how local schools will benefit from this key Lib Dem policy, which we successfully argued for inclusion in the Coalition Agreement. Supporting children in their early years and ensuring that there is financial support that follows them through compulsory education, to give them a fair crack at life, is extremely important and I am delighted that a flag ship Lib Dem policy will go a long way to ensure that happens."
