15th Dec: "Working with our EU neighbours is key to tackling climate change", says local MP

Local MP, Norman Baker, has, despite progress not being as fast as he would have liked, welcomed the outcome of the discussions at the Durban Climate Change Conference, saying "what progress there was only happened as a result of unified EU action", and "continuing to work with our EU neighbours is key to tackling Climate Change".

The outcomes of UN Climate Change conference in Durban represent a significant step forward for the international efforts to combat Climate Change, with the UK delegation under Lib Dem, Chris Huhne, playing a leading role in shaping EU policy. The talks resulted in a number of key outcomes.

As well as the diplomatic and technical outcomes, the Durban conference saw a highly political realignment with more than 120 countries forming a "coalition of high ambition" in support of a roadmap to a global legally binding deal. The EU made itself the leading actor in this conference in a way which has not happened before, with the UK operating within and through the EU delegation, co-operating closely with representatives of other member states and the European Commission.

Norman says: "It has long been my view that Climate Change is the number one threat to our world, and I and my Lib Dem colleagues have long maintained that we will only fully tackle it through binding global agreements. The Durban conference outcomes provide firm commitments and show that when we work as a team with our EU neighbours we can achieve good results. Indeed, tackling Climate Change is one of many issues on which working with our EU neighbours is the key to achieving success."
