People living in cold homes in East Sussex will receive £254,000 of extra support as a result of the government's £20million Warm Housing, Healthy People Fund, in an announcement welcomed by local MP, Norman Baker.
The money announced by the Department for Health is locally being directed to East Sussex's Warm Homes Healthy People project and can be spent providing items like thermal socks, blankets and increasing the number of volunteer snow wardens. Or the money could also be used to buy emergency electric heating and handyman services to cope with extra winter demand.
The £20million Warm Housing, Healthy People Fund will ensure 10,000 homes in England will be warmer this winter. Councils will be focusing on elderly people, families with young children and people with disabilities who do not qualify for existing support to heat their homes.
Norman says: "The winter can bring fear to some of the most vulnerable in society and practical steps need to be taken to support those who are living in cold homes. Elderly people or families with young children who find it difficult to heat their homes can benefit from the practical support that the fund will provide now and I welcome that."
